| The work is a partially dismembered
polyptych. It has been attributed to the Maestro di Borgo alla Collina.
This artistic creation is a derivation of Gherardo Starnina, the
“putative” teacher of Masaccio. In the side panels can
be seen, from left to right, St Anthony Abbot, St Peter, St John
the Baptist and St Matthew.
All the saints have attributes which aid their identification.
The figures, although elongated and heavily draped with rich fabrics,
are a bit wooden, particularly the angels low down, forced into
heraldic positions at the feet of the Virgin. In spite of this rigidity,
the whole is elegant and can deservedly be fitted into the international
Gothic tradition.
