| Over the last years, there
have been numerous restorations performed on the pictures of the
collection, many of which were in poor condition. A certain number
of these interventions were carried out on pictures which had undergone
repainting between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries for
motives of censorship. The decision was taken to remove these overpaintings,
which in many cases covered well-preserved areas.
In addition to Venus and Mars by
Paris Bordon, already freed from additions of this type
several years ago, the following have recently been definitively
cleaned: Juno places the eyes of
Argos in the tail of the peacock by Orazio Riminaldi
(ICR), the Magdalen by Jacob
van Loo and the Magdalen
by Pasquale Chiesa (Giantomassi-Zari), while still
continuing is the restoration of the important Putti
Fighting by Guido Reni (ICR), which in its time was
rendered more moral.
Raffaello, Ritratto di Beazzano
e Navagero
Over the next few years other pictures in the collection which
suffered treatment of this sort will be checked and, probably, cleaned
in order to restore them to their original state.
