| It has only recently been established
that the panel corresponds to the original by Annibale Carracci, mentioned
by Bellori, and not to a version by Domenichino.
This conclusion was reached through an examination of the style,
of the type of backing, of the many reworkings, as well as of the
documentary history of the work. It was painted in Rome for the
Facchinetti, taken to Bologna, and then brought back to Rome as
result of the marriage of Violante Facchinetti with Giovan Battista
Pamphilj.
The high quality of the picture recalls the “Domine quo vadis?”
in the National Gallery of London and the “Pietà”
in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
The recent correction is evidence how imprecise were the traditional
catalogues of Carracci’s work. |
